I think every incident of conflict on the planet revolves around people not having a good view of themselves. Every incident of bullying, every war, every church fight, every political cover-up – either people think too highly of themselves, or too lowly of themselves. We often have the wrong view of who we are.
Well, who does God say we are? What does God think of us? I’d like to encourage you today with a verse that speaks about what God thinks of us, well, believers anyway. Colossians 1:12 says that God has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints. That word, qualified, is an interesting word in the Greek. It’s only in 2 places in the New Testament: here, and in 2 Corinthians 3, where we are able or competent ministers.
God makes us qualified. He makes us able and fit. He makes us worthy. Really, what the author Paul is saying here is that God makes us enough for Him.
Wow. We are enough. I am enough. God says that I am OK with Him. Certainly my actions and thoughts betray that standing, at times anyway, but I am enough for God. If you are a believer, you are enough for Him too.
The whole world might hate you, but you are enough for God.
People may criticize your actions, and their words might even be right, but you are enough for God.
Your obedience to standards that other people hold high might be lacking, but you are enough for God. Maybe you feel guilty whenever you go to church, because you don’t feel worthy to be there, but you are enough for God.
Your prayer life may have seen better days, but you are enough for God. In fact, maybe you beat yourself up for being too afraid to pray out loud, but you are enough for God.
Your kids might be wild, your marriage might be a wreck, and maybe your dog can’t stand you, but you are enough for God.
If you feel that God can barely stomach the thought of you, think again. As a believer, to God, you are forgiven, chosen, holy, and dearly loved. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and you are worth dying for. You are blameless and righteous, and God is not counting your sins against you. You are a new creation, and you share in His divine nature. You matter.
You are enough for Him. You don’t need to do anything to impress Him, or win His love. Just trust in Jesus to do what you couldn’t do: be good enough for God. Jesus is enough for you, and you are enough for Him.
